120 Years of Graffitti

It struck me today that an individual’s desire to leave their mark or signature for posterity isn’t anything new.

In the space of two days in Austria I saw two examples of graffitti, separated only by a few miles and 120 years. Yesterday, we were exploring the Lamprechtshohle just outside Lofer. It’s a natural cavern rising up through the mountains over 2km. Early climbers inscribed the walls with their names and symbols, with one area so densely decorated that it is now called the Namenshalle (roughly translated as ‘resounding with names’).

Then today, walking round the lake at Zell am See, I saw some fresh graffitti near the Bahnfof dated 2008. The advent of the spray can was obviously pretty liberating, but you have to admire the commitment of the guy hanging upside down, several hundred feet up, at the end of a rope, in the dark in 1889. That said, your guess is as good as mine as to when the All Heil was added.
