WeightWatchers – Monopolising The Weekly Shop?

Posted by: JamesT

May 18, 2012 - 02:05:39

WeightWatchers recently opened its first shop in Reading. To my knowledge, this makes them the first food & beverage brand to open a store that sells only their produce (although I accept a large percentage of M&S’ stock is own-label).

The ‘lifestyle centre’ stocks 150 WeightWatchers products and offers a WW Meal Deal – a wrap, sandwich or chilled ready meal + crisps or fruit + a drink from £3.50, a fair price. The store also runs group support meetings & one-on-one consultations, to continue with the brand’s history of supporting its members with their weight-loss regimes.

The store will serve as a testing ground for new products and concepts before selling them into retailers. If the store is deemed a success, there are plans for further branches to open in London, Birmingham and Leeds.

I imagine the majority of WeightWatchers brand-loyalists will appreciate being able to purchase all their desired goods in one place, in the knowledge that they are buying healthy and can stick to the ‘points’ system. Walking around a crowded Sainsbury’s on a Saturday afternoon may cause customers to ditch their WeightWatchers devotion and be sucked in by price promotions. WeightWatchers have encouraged customers to remain loyal and if the debut store is a success, I’d be interested to see if any other brands will look into diversifying their portfolio of products and setting up shop.

Cardiff City: A Re-Brand Too Far?

Posted by: JamesT

May 9, 2012 - 05:05:18

Each football team in Italy has a section of fans known as Ultras. Widely seen as the cause of violence at games, they view themselves slightly differently. Managers, coaches, players, they all come and go. The Ultras believe they are the only firm points in the football world and the moral guardians of the club colours. The players and owners? They are just tenants in this precious old building and the landlords can throw them out at any time if the reputation of the locale is damaged.

Now imagine upsetting hundreds of thousands of Welsh football fans.

Cardiff City fans are also a passionate bunch. Head to the Welsh capital and ask anyone outside the stadium about their beloved Bluebirds and they would all claim to ‘bleed blue & white’. That may change next season as Malaysian owner Vincent Tan has decided he’s going to pull off the ultimate re-brand – an entire football club. Shirts, stadium seats and even the club’s crest are turning red. The rationale for this is rumoured to be that some Asian cultures consider red a colour of luck & prosperity. To be fair, Cardiff City do need a bit of luck. On Monday they were smashed 5-0 on aggregate by West Ham, confining them to a further year in the Championship. Since losing the FA Cup final to Portsmouth in 2008, they’ve faltered in the Playoffs for the past three seasons and were beaten on penalties by Liverpool in this season’s Carling Cup final. Not a great few years.

However, changing the club from blue to red is a pretty drastic move. It would cement the team’s standing as ‘the’ team in Wales (ignoring protests from the Liberty Stadium) and keep the team in-line with the national team. Plus, there is a pretty big dragon on their flag, so whacking one on the club crest is a quick win right?

But strolling into a club and ignoring 100+ years of history and tradition is not sitting kindly with the fans as you’d expect. Fans are screaming that this is only been proposed “to make money”, and give Cardiff City presence in Asia (not necessarily a bad thing). Rumours of a breakaway team (a la AFC Wimbledon and FC United of Manchester) have already surfaced to “stick it to the man”.

Rich folk of the world, if you’re reading – feel free to buy a club. Start to influence team selections negatively and fans will whinge. Sack the manager unjustly and they’ll start unfurling banners. Completely overhaul the team’s branding without consulting the fans? They’ll vote with their feet and stay away. Alienating your core audience is obviously a poor idea and something all brands should take into account.

Pitch 4 Change 2012

Posted by: Jamie

January 13, 2012 - 03:01:54

Just before Christmas and for the second year running we took part in Envision’sPitch 4 Change event at Austin Court in Birmingham. This year we funded the event and even gave the Pitch 4 Change logo a new look for the occasion.

In the weeks leading up to the event we mentored 5 groups of young people, helping them prepare pitches for their community focused projects, which they presented in front of a panel of ‘dragon’s’. The ‘Dragon’s Den’ style panel was made up of some of the second city’s most prominent business figures and included our very own Planning Director Mark Broughton.

Here are a couple of photos from the event below.

Congratulations to all those teams who secured funding towards their projects from the ‘dragons’
